BYU ranks 11th in eyes of recruiters

BYU Pictures, Images and Photos

I was speaking with a colleague the other day regarding college education and how these days a bachelor degree is alike a high school diploma, everyone seems to have one. After reading this, it made me happy that I was able to get an education at a wonderful school like BYU. Not only that, but that I was blessed enough to really not take on any debt in the process of my education. I can thank a lot of that to my parents who saved money to continue my education, the scholarships I earned, and working 25+ hours a week while going to school full time. Go BYU!

BYU is ranked No. 11 in the country for schools whose graduates were the top-rated by recruiters, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

In the list of “Top 25 Recruiter Picks,” BYU ranked ahead of schools such as Cornell, Cal-Berkeley, UCLA and MIT.

“This ranking confirms again what recruiters have always said about our students – that they make honest, hard-working and principled employees,” said Vaughn Worthen, manager of BYU's University Career Services. “We are pleased to be recognized as a top producer of highly rated graduates and look forward to sharing the good news with new recruiters.”

Companies also ranked BYU’s accounting major No. 1 in the country, according to the story.

“We’re thrilled with the Journal’s recognition of our No. 1 accounting program and the overall strength of the university,” said Gary Cornia, dean of BYU’s Marriott School of Management. “We are blessed with an extremely dedicated and pioneering faculty as well as enormously talented students who go on to perform very well in the workplace.”

Topping the list was Penn State, followed by Texas A&M and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Bloomberg Businessweek also recently recognized BYU graduates for receiving a high return on their college investment. The Businessweek study shows BYU grads can expect a nearly $800,000 return on their BYU degree.

What a cool place to work

Okay...I really am loving my job and I think it is a great place to work. However, I really think Dave Ramsey is awesome and am excited to go to his live event in 2 months. I just read this article from one of his new additions and just thought...my job is a great place to work...but wow, it would be incredible to work for Dave Ramsey...I really enjoyed this article...

7 Ways Working For Dave Ramsey Is Like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory

By Jon Acuff

"A month ago, my family and I moved from Atlanta, Georgia, to Nashville, Tennessee, so that I could work for Dave Ramsey. I’ve been a fan for years, but honestly never thought I’d find myself as a member of his team. Now, with a few weeks under my belt, I think I’m ready to confidently say what no one else has yet …Working for Dave Ramsey is like working at Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.
If you’re not familiar with the film or the book, allow me to say that the Chocolate Factory is as wonderful as you would expect a factory tasked with making chocolate would be. It is a place of merriment and joy. And, it turns out that it is much like having a job at the Dave Ramsey headquarters.

In fact, there are seven ways the two organizations are similar.

The halls smell like cookies.

That is not a metaphor—the halls literally smell like delicious cookies. Why? Because in the lobby, the grandmother you’ve always wanted is baking delicious cookies all day. Her name is Martha, and she is like Paula-Deen-meets-Martha-Stewart-meets-“Whoa, is there a lady baking free cookies in the lobby?” Last week, I went to see Martha and she was hand-dipping strawberries in chocolate, because we had some special guests in town and she wanted their visit to be magical.

You never know who will show up.

Every Wednesday morning, the whole company shares a devotional presentation. During my first week, I leaned over to my friend and said, “Who is speaking today?” Without missing a beat, he said, “The former lead singer of the band Petra.” Seems about right. You never know who you will see or hear from at Dave Ramsey. Expect celebrities, dignitaries and rock stars to pop up from time to time.

The Christmas party is legendary.

If you ask an employee about the annual Christmas event, they lower their voice like Haley Joel Osment in “The Sixth Sense” and quietly whisper, “I see parties.” An epic event that culminates an intense year, the Dave Ramsey Christmas party is the stuff of legends. It’s just one more way Dave and his team of leaders celebrate the employees in truly Wonka-sized proportions.

Dave does his radio show in the lobby.

Every now and then, I’ll walk downstairs and see Dave doing his nationally syndicated radio show from the lobby. Through the glass, you can watch him reach millions of people. It’s like watching Michael Jordan dunking on people in your lobby. He’s at the top of his game, doing what so few people can do, and he’s doing it from the lobby. The whole thing is surreal.

People come from across the country to yell in our building.

Don’t mind the screaming, that’s just people from around the nation yelling that they’re debt-free. I don’t know about your job, but I’ve never worked somewhere that people make pilgrimages to. I’ve never had a destination job where people come to mail their final credit card payment from the building. I’ve never worked in a building where groups of fans take tours. But people love chocolate factories, and people love Dave Ramsey.

The walls are covered with crazy modern art.

There is a piece of art hanging in the hall outside my office. It’s a shark with a big gaping mouth. Big deal, right? Sure, it would just be like any other piece of art, if it weren’t made entirely of chopped-up credit cards. Every year, thousands of people mail their destroyed credit cards to us. And sometimes, our fans even create works of art out of their credit cards to celebrate and commemorate their hard work. So expect some abstract, modern finance art around every corner. It only adds to the whimsical feel of the whole building.

The work you do is wild.

The other day, I got a phone call asking me to attend a quick meeting. I grabbed my 5-star notebook, because all I do is win, and went to the meeting. Turns out they wanted my help coming up with a good title for Dave’s next book. The last book sold millions. It was on the New York Times best-seller list. Therefore, I instantly got a little sweaty. Then Dave showed up and sat right next to me. No pressure. Millions of books on the line. The LeBron James of personal finance sitting next to me. You just need to sum up two decades of business leadership in a three-word book title. Go!

I’d love to tell you more about working with Dave Ramsey, but there’s chocolate to be made. Look for more updates from me in the future. Until then, here’s to hallways that smell like cookies and artwork that’s carved out of credit cards."

I totally think that maybe when we are debt free (we get closer every week) that we need to make our own pilgramage! How cool!!!

Watch out America's Handyman

This past weekend I watched my first episode of the reality show America's Handyman. Let's just say it inspired me to become a little more handy. Step #1 was for me to actually have some tools at the house that Omar would not steal for work. So we bought a bunch of tools, everything we could really need for the house. Drill, hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, nails, drill bits, etc.

My first project was finally hanging up the wood chime I bought months ago.
Look at this handy work...

Watch out America's Handyman...Kate is coming!

Labor Day Weekend

My parents came for Labor Day. I had off on Friday and also on Monday. Here is a run down of our weekend together.

Friday:
- We went to this Korean BBQ restaurant that Omar has been wanting to go to. My dad used to live in Korea when he was in the Air Force. He told us it was not very authentic but it was still yummy. I love the cafeteria trays....lol.

-Went to the MOSH (Museum of Science and History) - it was Omar and my first time going as well as my parents, and probably our last time. We thankfully went on $5 Fridays. We mainly went because my mom is bringing a large group of history teachers and wanted to know if it was something she should do with them or recommend for them since their hotel is nearby. We really did everything in 1 hour. We didn't go to the Science show, which I kind of wanted to see. But that one hour felt like 5. It was really kind of boring, sadly enough. Not enough science to appeal to science teacher, and not enough for history teachers. I think maybe I was spoiled by having the Orlando Science Center.

-My parents went and looked at the Downtown library, while Omar and I picked up our free Suns tickets.
-We then went to this neat bookstore where I sold a bunch of my sisters books for credit and picked out some new books.
-We went and ate at European Street Cafe in Riverside after looking at houses in Riverside and Springfield. I think that will be our last time eating there. I just am not very impressed with their food.
-We then went to the Suns game, where we also got tickets for Casey, Victor and Manuel. We all left after the Suns finally scored the only runs in the game during the 7th inning. We didn't make it to the fireworks that would have gone off at the end of the game. It was super hot, there was absolutely NO breeze at all.

-We then went to Happy Cup because I had bought some groupons. None of us, my dad was maybe an exception due to the amount that he got, really liked it, it was very different. However, the guy that worked there was super nice. I think I will stick to my Mochi for my frozen yogurt.

Saturday:
I worked so Omar spent the day with my parents when his job finished around 10 AM. They went to the Riverside Art Walk, looked at more homes in Riverside, and ate at Times Grill. They then looked at different housing developments and went home and watched some of the FSU game.

After they picked me up from work we went and ate at Cantina Loredo, which is a fine Mexican dining restaurant in the St. Johns Towncenter. It was an hour wait so that left us to look at different stores until then. We finally sat and service took FOREVER for our food. Then when we finally got our food, it was very luke warm to not being able to eat it. We don't typically complain but it took over an hour to get food that was not even warm when people that parties our same size got their food prior to us. They ended up comping our meal.

We went home and watched a movie.

Sunday:

Church, nap, movies, and a yummy dinner.

Monday:

Waffle House, and then we split up. Omar and Dad went to the Outlets to buy some tennis shoes. I printed off some coupons for them and they were so proud of themselves for saving $70 on the shoes they bought. I'm teaching my hubby well. My mom and I went to Home Depot to pick out paint samples for the guest bedroom dresser and walls. We also went and looked at the bookshelves that I am still waiting on back order form Hobby Lobby. Here's praying that week 3 will be the lucky week that they will come in.

Next time my folks come up we will do the beach.
